EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
